The Coffee House: My new NYC haunt
Well it's official, i'm now a junior member of
The Coffee House, a venerable NYC club founded almost 100 years ago as the "foes of finance." This eclectic group of writers, artists, scholars and creatives included notable members such as Herbert Hoover, John Steinbeck, Henry Luce and George Gershwin.
So why me? It all draws back to my father-in-law Michael Barlerin, proud Coffee House member. A few years ago Michael gave me Roger Angell's memoir as a gift. Reading about the literary circle he grew up around made me realize that being on the West Coast meant Caroline and I were less able to extend the wonderful histories her mother and father had created in Dallas and New York through their own involvement in the arts. So for Christmas this year when Michael proposed putting me up for membership of course i was interested. It also helped that perfectly consistent with Michael's outlook, this club wasn't some snooty stuffy affair but a group with renegade spirit.
Now i just need to figure out more ways to get back east in order to meet my fellow Coffee House members.

Caroline and I attended last night's opening reception for the
Annie Leibovitz show here in SF. Definitely recommended if you're in the area - a very personal retrospective with fewer of the iconic celebrity portraits (although there were some wonderful shots of household figures) and more of her family, friends and landscape work.

Had a senior moment at the gym today and forgot the combination to my masterlock. They needed to cut it off for me. The bright side is that by forgetting it, i'm sure i used the brainspace to retain something way more important.

Caroline goes to Aspen, Hunter to the bar
With Caroline out of town at the

Theatre of Magic, indisputably one of the better machines from the mid-90s before the industry pretty much went under.

Spent a few hours at the annual Academy of Friends AIDS benefit here in San Francisco. Caroline put on an amazing gown previously only worn at Beth and Teymour's wedding. Resolutions 2007: Yoga
So although i usually eschew New Year's Resolutions I decided to embrace the meme this year. One of my intentions is to start practicing yoga again -- nothing serious, just a weekly session -- so this morning i returned to the studio i used to visit. The folks at

From the mouth of babes
Our five year and seven year old neighbors get overjoyed and like to shout and wave when we see them. Usually they'll tell us about where they're going or what they are eating for dinner. Today:
"We're going to the grocery store. Mom says Luna is dead."
It's cute when spoken excitedly by kids.

Werewolves of London
My Europe trip in September had a number of interesting developments. Now at least one of them can be revealed:
BSkyB and Google announce pioneering partnership "He [Eric Schmidt, Google CEO] said that Google was planning similar deals with other large media firms and content providers. "If we can get this structure right over the next few months and it rolls out, then it becomes the index case for every other country and every other operator.""
Damn right!

Great Grapes
CB and I spent Sunday afternoon in Heaven. Or at least as close as you can get while still maintaining a pulse. We were guests of the Sterling family at their
Iron Horse Vineyard. Iron Horse produces prestige wine - it has been served at the White House for 20 years - and, if you're lucky enough, complements it with absolutely awesome meals prepared by the
winery chef.

Friday Night Lights
Took a few hours on Friday night to hide from work (which I'll otherwise be doing most of the weekend). How did we make use of our time? Quite excellently I must say!
- Started with drinks at Fifth Floor with our friend Stephen Dubner (one half of Freakonomics) who was in town for a lecture.
- We were then quickly joined by our friend Kim Newell. Topics for discussion included the difference between dwarfs and midgets, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, YouTube, how to explain death to children, and a relatively firm offer to appoint me the leader of Stephen's Kitchen Appliance club during our December trip to NY.
- Stephen departed for dinner plans so we walked over to Bong Su, one of Esquire's Top New Restaurants where we were joined by a friend of Kim's from her residency.
- Although there were initially some trust issues at the table, the group allowed me to place ourselves in the hands of our waiter Joshua who did an excellent job picking all our food and wine for the evening.

London in rearview, now in Zurich
Flew to Zurich today where I'll be until Wed morning. Didn't arrive until late in the afternoon but still enough time to stroll in late September sunshine. Walked over to the Google office to get my bearings and then happened upon various Swiss folks doing the things Swiss people do, which basically seems to be kissing, smoking and eating ice cream.

Lost in Translation
Okay, it's not Tokyo and I'm no Billy Murray, but the jet lag bug has got me. Another night with trouble falling asleep. Never a night owl anyway, all i want is some zzzzzzz. I hear flying west is easier than east because all you need to do is stay up later, not try to fall asleep earlier. Now they tell me....

The Birthday Upgrade Strategy Does Not Work
Yesterday was my birthday and I spent my evening on a plane crossing the Atlantic. Work is taking me to London, Zurich and Seattle for the next two weeks meaning lots of air time and likely some
Airborne. Which, by the way, despite what the woman sitting behind me insisted, IS supposed to be added to water and not chewed like an effervescent vitamin.
Despite our runaway economic success, my company is still pretty sensible when it comes to travel expenses so I flew coach to Heathrow. Used almost all my tricks to try and snag an upgrade from economy but alas it was not to be. Fortunately, I was able to snag one of the limited seats with extra legroom -
29K.
Now I'm in London, back from a stroll outside (sunlight fights jet lag) and preparing for a quick workout before spending the rest of the night on my laptop cranking through emails and finishing a presentation I need to deliver tomorrow morning.

Rocky Mountain High
Caroline and I flew into Aspen last night to begin the celebration of
Kate Nitze's wedding. It's been two years since we last visited but the town still has the familiar mix of easy going crunchiness and ridiculous wealth. The
St. Regis gave us a junior suite so i've been enjoying the complimentary dark chocolate, although not to the degree that I won't look forward to tonight's dinner at the
Hickory House. Hey, we hiked
Hunter's Creek Trail today so I deserve it!
